Civic Engagement and Service Learning
The Center for Integrative Studies (CIS) in Social Science offers an advanced level Civic Engagement and Service Learning opportunity for students who want to explore contemporary community service problems, needs, and opportunities for service. The Civic Engagement and Service Learning course will provide an opportunity to enhance students’ understanding of people from diverse cultural backgrounds, as well as introduce students to the complexity of community issues in a real-world context. Students will select one community area of interest to investigate: education/recreation, senior citizens, or criminal justice. Each student will observe three diverse community sites. They will present their observations, investigations, and analyses in a final reflection paper.
CIS offers this service learning opportunity as a 1-credit graded course. Students do not need to be enrolled in an ISS course. Some previous volunteer experience is highly recommended.
